Structural Design in Progress

EL-House is a 220m² two-storey residential villa in Nicosia, designed by architects Demetris Ktorides and Ioanna Anastasiadou. The project presented significant structural engineering challenges centred on a first floor bedroom cantilevering 2.85 meters beyond the ground floor footprint over the swimming pool.


The fully glazed perimeter at the cantilever edge created zero tolerance for deflection — any movement would crack the glass. Our solution combined a hybrid steel/RC column system at the cantilever tips, allowing the ground and first floor slabs to act together structurally, nearly doubling stiffness while maintaining the architects' clean aesthetic.


Meeting Cyprus seismic Zone 2 requirements with thin circular columns and minimal shear walls demanded careful structural planning. We combined moment-resisting frames with strategically placed shear walls to achieve lateral stability without compromising the design's openness.
